More About This House

In the Deep south where cotton was king, Aberdeen,Mississippi was one of the many small towns that were created to please the wives of large Plantation owners. The rich black soil that surrounds Aberdeen was perfect for the formation of some of the most successful cotton plantations in the entire south. With all the new wealth, what better way to display these riches than to build a bigger, more elaborate home than anyone else in town? This was how Adams French Mansion came about, the mansion was built in 1856 by Colonel John Cox, one of the wealthiest plantation owners in North Mississippi, who was in the timber and slave trading business. The mansion was built and given as a wedding gift in 1857 to his only daughter Mary Jane Cox, who married Robert Adams a local banker in the same year. This beautiful Greek Revival home is considered a architectural wonder to have been built in Aberdeen or for that matter anywhere only taking two years to complete. This was done in part to available lumber from Mr. Cox sawmills. Adams French Mansion is situated on the highest elevation point in town and maybe seen from Main Street which lies only three blocks to the south. The four acre grounds are beautifully landscaped with irrigation and formal gardens, fountains, statuary, walkways, and a 1905 restored chapel used for weddings and other community events. There are 7000 square feet in this beautiful mansion which has five bedrooms, five bathrooms, modern updated kitchen, and a formal parlor which opens to a formal dinning room. This home also has a basement made into a full gym. On the third floor you will find a home theater along with giant closets, bathroom, and a extra bedroom. The house has an elevator which goes from the basement to the second floor.

Adams French has original mantles, heavy crown molding, like no other in town and a spiral staircase to the second floor and then spirals on to the third floor. This palatial home is being offered completely furnished with period furnishings such as ; Prudence Mallard Rosewood 3/4 tester bed, Meeks Empire matching bookcases, 8 piece Rosewood parlor suite by Henkel, Marble top Rococo parlor table by J&J.W. Meeks, 12 foot long Empire dinning table with 12 dinning chairs, C.Lee full tester Plantation bed just to name a few of the hundreds of great pieces of Southern Finery. All the rooms are tastefully done with period accessories. The windows have heavy custom drapes along with custom plantation shutters throughout the home. All rooms have period 19th Century chandeliers and gasoliers that go with the sale. This beautiful home is on the National Register of Historic places. This property is available without furnishings at a reduced price.
