This magnificent, historic, 1880s Italianate home is located on Cherokee Rd. in Louisville, KY. The “Michael Muldoon House” is designated a Kentucky Landmark by the Kentucky Heritage Commission, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Cherokee Triangle Historic District (1979). Mr. Muldoon was a world-renowned stone carver and monument maker, as well as a very successful businessman. The character of this building reflects a quiet elegance reminiscent of the manor houses found in Mr. Muldoon’s native homeland of Ireland. It features 12 - foot ceilings, beautiful mantels and woodwork, hardwood floors and (unique to the area) wrought iron porches. The Muldoon family lived in the home until the 1940s. HGTV featured this property in their program “Old Homes Restored.”

Currently, there are four apartments in the approximately 5500 sq. ft. building. Two of these are owner-occupied. Fortunately, a conscientious effort was made to retain the original layout of the house when the change to multiple family was made. Because of this, a conversion of the property back to its original grandeur as a single family home is a wonderful option. Each apartment has its own heat and central air, in keeping with the new trend of “zoning” used in larger, new construction homes to save on energy bills.

At the back of the lot is a huge, 2-story, approximately 2300 sq. ft. carriage house. It contains a “townhouse” style one-bedroom apartment that is approx. 1000 sq. ft. The owner uses the rest of the space as a workshop/storage area. This would be a perfect set-up for a home office or you could simply retain the apartment for added income. The secluded backyard has a beautiful brick wall down one side of the property, while the other side is bounded by a living fence of colorful crape myrtles, roses and Rose of Sharon bushes. The house is situated on an extra-large city lot, 77 x 180 feet. The home is located in the heart of the Highlands in the prestigious Cherokee Triangle Historic District.

1016 Cherokee Rd. is strategically situated and is not much more than a 5 - minute car, bus or bike ride from downtown. Within walking distance to restaurants, pubs, boutiques and galleries, it is also close to the necessities such as groceries, pharmacies, banks & a post office. The area is very family friendly. A 409 acre Olmsted-designed city park is a couple of blocks away, while the local schools are some of the best that Louisville has to offer.
