Historic Deer Chase in Middlesex County, VA SOLD !!!

Sold in May of 2019 -The original patent for the land grant to Captain Oswald Cary, the son of a London merchant, dates to 1685 and included 460 acres. George Monier Williams, the artist responsible for many of the sketches of the historic homes of Middlesex County, was a frequent visitor at Deer Chase. "One of the most important persons connected with this house, however, may always remain anonymous: the brick mason that constructed it." The fact that this home has survived through varying degrees of affluence, decline and revival, is a testament for his skill in his craft.
Turk's Ferry, which operated on the Piankatank River from a neighboring property, was the earliest operating ferry in the country. The ferry was replaced with a bridge in 1910. Turk's Ferry Rd. remains just down the road from Deer Chase.
A long winding drive leads you into this private enclave with boxwood garden and sweeping views of pastures and farmland. The property includes an old school house that with interior improvements made, could serve as a guest cottage. The school house is estimated to be of similar age as the home. The large barn (5000 sq. Ft.) has a cooled workshop and double doors to allow for vehicle access. There are 16 acres included in the price, with a potential purchase of 56 acres if desired.
The home has been well maintained and is in surprisingly good condition. There is a new slate roof and many recent improvements.

This Flemish bond brick and slate cape has been updated with new baths and remodeled kitchen in 2007. There is a utility room area located off the first floor hall with washer & dryer. It has central gas heat and Heat Pump for central air. The home has a full length center hall foyer flanked with parlors on each side and french doors opening to the lovely covered porch in the rear. The home has perfect symmetry with well balanced placement of windows, a fireplace in every room, 11 plus foot ceilings, heart pine floors, handsome wood mouldings and spacious rooms. There are three bedrooms upstairs. There are 2 master suites with private baths, fireplace and closets. The 2 master suites are spacious and will accommodate large furniture & king size beds. Closet space is functional. The third bedroom is smaller and could double as a den. A large center hallway upstairs has space for a small office / study area with nice view of the back pasture.

There are expansive views of the grounds and surrounding land out of every window. The property is close the Rappahannock and Piankatank Rivers. Boat landings and deep water Marinas are available in the nearby historic fishing village of Urbanna, about 5 miles away. Richmond is approx 1 hour away. Williamsburg is about 40 minutes. Deltaville, Gloucester, Gwynn's Island, Irvington, Kilmarnock, Matthews and Whitestone are just down the road.
This is a rare opportunity to experience history first hand. Call or email to request a full brochure.
