History
The current cottage is the former kitchen and schoolroom of the main house. The farm served as a refuge for wounded Union Army soldiers during the civil war. The main house burned sometime in the early 1900's. This cottage was built in 1752 and used or occupied until the late 1940's. The current owners purchased it in the early 1950's and moved in a few years later.Walled graveyard on the property has the graves of the residents during the 1800's and possibly earlier.
This is the home of nationally renowned Landscape Architect, M. Meade Palmer, FASLA. He loved trees and there are a number of interesting specimens on the property, such as Cornus Officiandas, Cornus Kusa, Metasequoia and English Yew.
Of these trees are the Virginia State Champion largest "Horse Chestnut" and the Virginia State Champion largest "English Yew". The yew may also be the largest in the U.S.
Recent Improvements
Roof replaced with 40 yr shingles in 2002Addition of 3rd floor bedroom and bath and remodel of master bedroom and bath in 2007
Hardy Plank exterior siding was added in 2007. Underneath that siding is wood siding and under that are the original walls. Lower level is below grade with stone walls, second level is probably a mix of 1700's, 1940's and 1960's walls. Interior is plaster. Third level is new as of 2007 with an attic portion from the 1940's.
