Every year since 1971, preservationists around the country have joined together in May to celebrate National Historic Preservation Week. The National Trust initiated Preservation Week as a way to showcase grassroots preservation activity in communities nationwide. This year, Historic Charlotte has again partnered with the Charlotte Historic District Commission to organize Preservation Week in Charlotte, NC. This house is the 2004 Local Historic District Highlight Award Winner.

Carport Construction
The original gravel drive to the left side of the house was removed and regraded and the area was reclaimed as yard space. A porte cochere-style carport was constructed to the right side of the existing house. Structure was set in from the front plane of the house by 6 feet. Materials and details match existing house, including brick piers with concrete caps, asphalt shingles on roof, shingle siding on face of beam overhang, soffit/fasica details, exposed rafters and wood columns. Concrete drive and parking area are accessed from the side, utilizing the existing alley that had been unimproved and unused since the 1920s. An 8-inch brick wall with soldier cap and wooden lattice screens was constructed between the piers on front side of carport to screen the parking from the street. Landscaping will also be planted to screen the structure from the street.Comments & Feedback
