The Skyland Hotel..... Where Tradition Meets a Contemporary Vision.
The Construction of the Skyland hotel in 1929 enriched the atmosphere of Downtown Hendersonville in many ways. It was originally built to furnish the city with a real downtown hotel to accommodate vacationers and the many artists that frequented Hendersonville because of its rich culture and inspiring beauty. It also provided accomodations for the big bands of the 30’s and 40’s that would bring downtown to life as they filled the air with music and couples danced into the night in the ball room of the Skyland Hotel on the main floor. It also became the hotel of choice for Ronald and Nancy Reagan when the President would visit the Hendersonville area to deliver his motivational speeches at the local plant for the General Electric Corporation. As Hendersonville grew over time, additional hotels became available, and the novelty of the Skyland Hotel was overlooked. Years later the hotel was converted into private residences to offer a living experience unlike any other in Hendersonville. The Skyland Hotel continues to offer that same living experience today, and is a prime example of how Downtown Hendersonville is able to preserve its history and tradition and incorporate those aspects into the progression of the community. Ownership in the Skyland Hotel is an opportunity to share is the progression of its history as well. Today it is comprised of 41 residential condominiums and it is also the home of the Blue Ridge Performing Arts Center and the Arts Council of Henderson County.
The Blue Ridge Performing Arts Center features a grand marble lobby, a cozy 98 seat theatre and a 20 seat digital screening room. It is a venue for all types of musical entertainment, comedy, live theatre, foreign films, ballroom dance classes such as Salsa and Swing, host to various writers, speakers, community events and art shows. The Arts Counsel is a non-profit arts organization serving the public through exhibitions, classes, lecture, workshops and educational programs.
