Elegant Restored Mansion

Front View
Front View
The house is fronted with a five foot stone retaining wall and stone-wall-bordered stairs leading through a wrought iron gate to an arched entryway with fluted pilasters and leaded glass sidelights.
When you pass through the gated entrance of this magnificent house on 1.4 wooded and picturesque acres, you have the sense of entering a country estate even though it is located in the middle of the convenience of a small city. This grand but comfortable mansion, once owned by one of Waterbury’s original industrialist families, was built in 1908 and substantially renovated in 1950 by one of the country’s leading Colonial Revivalist architects. Listed on the National Register of Historical Places, it has been carefully restored to its original grandeur.

House Interior

The front entrance opens into a large oak-paneled foyer and a grand staircase; adjacent to the front door is a half bath; to the left through a large oak pocket door is the fire-placed living room with ornate pilasters and the French-door entrance to the beamed-ceiling sun porch; next to the stairs is a walk-in coat closet; to the right is the dining room with its mahogany and stained glass built-ins and its own fireplace; further to the right is the cherry-paneled library with elaborate fireplace surround and built-in bookcases; directly ahead through a discreet oak door is the butler’s pantry leading to the spacious kitchen with granite countertops, cosy sitting area with wood-burning stove, walk-in pantry and attached laundry room.

Up the staircase the first landing is graced with two large leaded stained glass windows, and the second landing opens onto a large second floor foyer. Opening onto the second floor foyer are a large master bedroom with fireplace and two closets (out of a total of 16 closets in the house), a two-room guest suite and a dressing room. The linen-closet-lined back hall leads to two small back bedrooms (or offices) and the back stairs. Nearly every bedroom has its own private bath (total of four).

Stairs from the second floor foyer lead to three bedrooms on the third floor with its own period design bathroom and a spacious attic storage area. There is an all-house attic fan on the third floor.

The entrance from the attached garage leads up a ramp to a basement of work rooms, storage rooms, a half bath, a wine cellar and the elevator, which stops on every floor.
