FAIRFIELD HISTORY: Founded in 1801 and named for Fairfield, England. Battle of Fairfield fought July 03, 1863, concurrent with the Battle of Gettysburg, played an important role in securing the Hagerstown Rd., enabling Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia to retreat through Fairfield towards the Potomac River. Lee and his officers stopped to eat at the Fairfield Inn, located 1 block east of this home, which is still operated today. George Armstrong Custer led the Union troops that pursued the Confederates retreating through Fairfield. This home is rumored to have been used as a Civil War Hospital in the days following the Battle of Gettysburg.
