Offaway

Appropriately named, "Offaway", this custom designed New England Style home was built in 1921 by a prominent Mercersburg attorney, Henry Hoke Spangler. Situated along the west side of the tree-lined street of Linden Avenue, the home sits back on high ground with a terraced front lawn.

Mr. Spangler commissioned a Philadelphia architect by the name of R. Brognard Okie to design the home so as to accent his collection of hand-forged locks and keys of iron, the Franklin fireframe in the parlor fireplace, as well as their 18th & 19th century furniture handed down from generations. The outcome was a home built of European structural integrity and boasting a spacious, elegant floor plan that is perfect for entertaining.

This remains to be the case today, as the character and charm of its origin have been so perfectly restored and at the same time, the current owners have brought it into the 21st century with amenities including a gourmet kitchen and modern ceramic baths. The condition of the home is mint because it stayed in the family of the original owners until 2003...all the while preserved with eccentricity as a showplace. Floral wall coverings and dated fixtures throughout were replaced with a tasteful interior decor that belongs in "Home Beautiful" magazine...simply elegant.

The high-livability of the property is evident from the time you enter. The finished three levels of living space span 3,500 square feet and include 5 bedrooms, 2 full and 2 half baths.

From the rear limestone patio, one can see the mountain range in the distance and watch the squirrels play in the park-like yard prefaced by a stone wall.

This home is minutes from the Mercersburg Academy, Whitetail Ski & Golf, and major commuter routes.
