The Dr. W R Cullom House & Historic Wake Forest

Believed to have been built in 1891, the W R Cullom house sits across from "The Birthplace" (the Calvin Jones House which was the first Wake Forest College building) on North Main Street (formerly called Faculty Avenue) in the WF Historic District. The Birthplace Society and the Wake Forest Cultural Arts Council sponsor free concerts each spring on the lawn of the Calvin Jones house which you can enjoy from the front porch swing. The Wake Forest Independence Day Children's Parade also starts and ends there.

Dr. Cullom lived here from 1903 to 1963. He taught religion and became the Chairman of the department at nearby Wake Forest College. The college moved to Winston-Salem in 1956 and became a university in 1958. The Dr. W. R. Cullom House was featured in the 2006 WF Historic Homes Tour.

The updated house is about 4000 square feet with zoned HVAC, gorgeous bay windows, and hardwood floors. It is a 2-story Victorian Italianate gable-and-wing type house, complete w/swing on wraparound porch and a circular drive on the side. There are 10 Rooms, 4 Bedrooms on the second floor (smallest is 17' x 14' - see picture containing single bed), 3 Full Baths, and 2 of the 6 first floor rooms have also been bedrooms in the past.

All original openings have original crossetted surrounds. The front wing and the south side have 1-story panelled and bracketed bay windows. The north side porch has original chamfered posts with sawnwork brackets and a sawnwork railing. The front porch has had replacement columns for many years. Following a 1970 fire, the original gabled roof was rebuilt as a shallow hip roof.

The first floor has hardwood floors and 11' ceilings. There is carpet over the original floors upstairs and 9' ceilings. The center hall is 33' x 10'. The new master bath has custom modern ceramic tile floors, shower, and 10 jet Jacuzzi tub. It features matching his and her French style vanity sinks. The other 2 full baths have traditional tile floors and walls. The master bedroom is 19' x 16'.

All bedrooms have large closets (3 are walk-in). The 1st floor room next to the full bath makes a great 5th BR or 1st floor Master Bedroom. It's currently set up as a family room, but was originally Dr. Cullom's bedroom. The Music room (1st floor) was originally used as another (6th) BR.

The newly updated Kitchen features granite counter tops, new appliances, ample cabinets and ceramic floor. The Breakfast/Sunroom opens onto a custom deck overlooking the open, but private back yard.

NOTE:Wake Forest is a town of 13,000 which still has small town charm but also has all the advantages of a larger city because of its proximity to Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina.

The Cullom House is only 3 blocks from Southeastern Seminary (the former Wake Forest College campus). It is also within reasonable driving distance (20-45 minutes) of Duke University, NC State, UNC Chapel Hill, downtown Raleigh, Durham, and RTP (Research Triangle Park).
