Historic Pioneer Home

This one-of-a-kind, historic pioneer home and former bed and breakfast, The Nine Gables Inn, is the oldest documented house in Kanab. The house represents the first presence of substantive architecture in the community, and for many years, the most prominent structure in the community.

It was completed in 1872 for Levi Stewart and his wife, Artimacy Wilkerson Stewart, and family. Levi Stewart was an early pioneer settler and founder of Kanab. Edwin Dilworth Woolley, Jr. (Dee) and his wife, Emma Bentley Woolley, purchased the home in 1889. Mary Woolley Chamberlain, his daughter, was the first woman mayor of Kanab. She grew up in the house and spent part of her young married life in the home.

This home was always known as a house of hospitality, as many notables stayed here. Some of those mentioned in Mary Woolley Chamberlain's history are: Buffalo Bill Cody, explorer Benjamin Cluff, and novelist Zane Grey.
