This well maintained 106 year old majestic home is located in the heart of Mannington, West Virginia’s Historic District (population 2,124) on a dead end street overlooking Buffalo Creek. This all brick two and one-half story was constructed in 1900 and is within a block of Mannington Middle School (built in 1902) and is within walking distance to Hough Park (the local public park) and Mannington’s public swimming pool. Area churches as well as the public library are within a few blocks. The central downtown business district, complete with antique street lighting and new concrete and brick sidewalks is within a five minute walk with shopping, dining, florist shop, bakery, banking, doctor’s and dentists offices, and pharmacies. Its not Mayberry, but it is darn close. This home was part of the George W. Bowers estate, and later his last surviving family member, his daughter, Frances B. Bowers estate. George Bowers was an industrialist, banker, and state senator who founded Bowers Pottery Company, the worlds largest sanitary pottery in Mannington in the early 1900’s. This home was purchased by the late George Bowers as a second “temporary” residence for his family, should his Mansion located but a few blocks away on High Street be destroyed by fire or otherwise. Frances Bowers died in March 2000 and the present owners purchased this home from the estate at that time. The estate of Frances Bowers set up a family trust to be held in perpetuity to benefit the residents of Mannington, Marion County, and the citizens of West Virginia. Each year the trust distributes hundreds of the thousands of dollars to various organizations and municipalities throughout West Virginia with particular emphasis on the city of Mannington. This grand home has four primary rooms and a powder room on the first floor in addition to a large hallway foyer. The second floor consists of four bedrooms and a full bathroom. The third floor walkup attic has three finished rooms. The interior finish includes oak flooring, sculptured oak moldings and trim, solid oak doors, plaster walls and ceilings (some ceilings have scrolled ornate). Most rooms have gas fireplaces (with gas stoves) mirrored ornate mantels with ceramic inlays. The dining room has five foot high wood wainscoting with china shelf. Between the dining room and kitchen is a nice “built in” pantry with plenty of original wood cabinetry and shelving. The formal living room measures 16.3 x 13.3 feet, has large oak pocket doors, painted fireplace mantel, scrolled plaster ceiling, and hardwood flooring. Across the hall from the living room is a 16.3 x 13.3 foot family room with bay window overlooking the front porch, two sets of oak pocket doors (one from the central hallway and the other separating the formal dining room), oak floors, and a natural wood mantel gas fireplace. The dining room measures 20.3 x 14.3 feet and its walls have five foot high wood wainscoting, a bay window, and hardwood floors. The kitchen is original with white steel sink, some cabinetry, a nice built in pantry between kitchen and formal dining room, and a door leading onto a 6 x 14 foot rear porch. With pocket doors open, this home is a wonderful place for entertaining guests as the three large rooms (living room, family room, and dining room) open to each other. A side entrance also leads to the foyer, and provides access to a conveniently located first floor powder room. Two stairways lead to the second floor, a formal stairway leading from the foyer hallway to a windowed landing, and the other, a rear servant’s stairway, from the kitchen located at the rear of the house. Four nice size bedrooms (two bedrooms are 13.3’ x 16.3’, another is 14.8’ x 13.3’, and the fourth bedroom is 12.8’x 13.1’), three with “walk in” closets and one with a second floor 6’ x 14’ porch compliment the second floor. A large “walk in” closet highlights the second floor central hallway. An original bathtub and pedestal vanity are precious fixtures found in the second floor bathroom. A “laundry shoot” drops dirty clothing from the second floor to the basement laundry. The walk up attic with windowed landing and accesses three more rooms for a multitude of uses. The unfinished basement has both inside and outside access. There is a laundry area and commode in the basement. Other items of note include many original light fixtures and stained glass windows. The columned front porch measures approximately 33.5 feet x 9 feet. Located at the rear of the site is a three bedroom wood frame cottage containing approximately 1,098 square feet. It is vacant and is not being utilized but could provide rental income, in law quarters, or servant’s quarters.
