Slattery House History

The first recorded deed on this property was issued to LeGrand Rockwell on February 25, 1839 and recorded on October 12, 1841. Mr. Rockwell sold the property to James Maxwell on November 25, 1839 and that deed was recorded on November 27, 1846. The property was sold to Levi Perry on 4/1/1848; Chauncy Davis on 11/19/1850; Julia Young on 9/28/1880; Fannie Peck on 7/1/1891 and George Lytle on 6/2/94. A spec home was built on the property in 1896 and on 4/30/1901 John J. Slattery (J.J.) purchased the home for his family and it remained in the Slattery family until the 1980s when it was purchased by Daniel Dixon and then sold to Jerrold Jasper on 5/31/91. Lee & Genette Zubrod purchased the home and meticulously restored the home to its original grandeur as well as updating and improving the home with modern conveniences. Three generations of Slatterys lived in the home and J.J. Slattery purchased and ran a men's habberdashery in downtown Elkhorn. The Slattery family moved to Elkhorn from Kansas. In its early history the home had a turret on the northeast roofline and it is uncertain at what point this roofline was altered and why. The home is filled with original trim, woodwork, staircases, fireplace, windows etc. and many small artifacts have been found in its renovation and preserved.
