Willow Glen, San Jose, California
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Willow Glen is a neighborhood in central San Jose, California. It is located southwest of Downtown San Jose. The local high school is Willow Glen High School, and the local weekly newspapers are the Willow Glen Resident and the Willow Glen Times.

Geography

Willow Glen is located southwest of Downtown San Jose, south of the Midtown and Rose Garden neighborhoods, east of the West Valley neighborhoods, and north of the Cambrian Park neighborhood and the city of Campbell, California.

Political divisions

This former city was annexed by San Jose in 1936 under the promise of capital improvements and better emergency facilities. Since its annexation, its residents have tried half-heartedly to break away from San Jose. Willow Glen's local public high school is Willow Glen High School, which is part of the San Jose Unified School District. The other high school to serve the community is Abraham Lincoln High School. Its ZIP codes are 95124 and 95125.

Economy

Willow Glen has a small growing business district on Lincoln Avenue mainly between Minnesota Avenue and Coe Avenue, which has been expanding outward in both directions on Lincoln Avenue.

The community's main street, Lincoln Avenue, has become known as simply "The Avenue". There is a variety of restaurants, professional offices and many small retail businesses on "The Avenue" and nearby side streets especially Willow Street and Minnesota Avenue. Willow Glen Business and Professional Association
( http://www.downtownwillowglen.org ) is active in improving the neighborhood business district and sponsoring local events.

Culture and arts

Willow Glen has several traditions. The best-known occurs during the Christmas holiday season. Neighbors join together, on many streets, to provide a uniform display of small lighted Christmas trees, with one in front of each house, which are affectionately referred to as "Charlie Brown" Christmas Trees. The practice has been a long-standing tradition, which has been growing throughout Willow Glen, in recent years. There is also a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, at the Willow Glen Elementary School, located at Minnesota and Lincoln Avenues, during the Christmas season and carriage rides on Lincoln Avenue.

Other popular events are: Dancing On The Avenue (June) and Founders Day (September) as well as neighborhood block parties and area garage / block sales during nice weather. Willow Glen Neighborhood Association has a web site ( http://www.wgna.net ) that has hundreds of resident community recommendations for local businesses, retailers, resturants and services as well as a 700+ resident email eList ) discussion list for local residents to discuss community events and local / neighborhood issues.
