As the modern movement progressed across North America it became regionalized – taking on characteristics unique to the various geographic regions. The broader concepts of modern stayed the same – efficiency, flow, innovation, experimentation, etc. But each area made modern their own. Here in the Pacific Northwest we developed a Northwest Regionalism which took the core modern concepts and gave them a Northwest twist. Asian, Scandinavian, Native American influences combined with plentiful wood and stone, dramatic topography and moderate weather softened modern and many would claim made it warmer and more inviting.

This home is a fabulous example of Northwest Regionalism as practiced by one of the best of the best – Roland Terry. Terry passed away just a few weeks ago but his phenomenal legacy is indelibly etched in Northwest architecture (also see, www.canlis.com for additional sense of Terry’s work).

The home is perfectly situated on a large lot in the Clyde Hill area of the Seattle Metro area’s Eastside with dramatic views west toward Seattle and the Olympic Mountains. It is large but has a wonderful sense of detail. Many light fixtures were designed by noted Northwest artist Irene McGowan. Some interior updating was done in the 1960’s by Terry friend, many time collaborator, and also Northwest icon interior designer Jean Jongeward. With the right help it would be relatively easy to expand this home without damaging the original vision – we can point you toward the right architects.
