Airy Green

History surrounds you at Airy Green. This 51 acre tract was once part of a 1200 acre grant from the King of England. The beautiful home was built in 1780 by Captain William Walker of the Cumberland Militia and patriot in the Revolutionary War. The home remained in the Walker family until the present owners purchased the property in 1991.

While changes have been made to the home over the years, great care has been taken to maintain its original colonial charm. This is truly one of the most well-maintained historic properties in the area. Original features include chair rails, heart pine flooring, cross and bible doors, hand-hewn beams, root cellar, dormers with sliding glass panels, cypress clapboard siding, standing seam metal roof, solid wood doors with transoms and original hardware. The original central part of the house is a story and a half above the cellar. In the 1850’s the matching wings that now house the master bedroom and kitchen were added. Other modern day enhancements include a comfortable rear screened porch, custom painting throughout, storm windows and doors, updated electrical and plumbing, heat pump central heating and air, and a modernized kitchen.

The property boasts several outbuildings, including a barn, garage, workshop, woodhouse, potting shed and smokehouse. The property fronts two roads yet remains distinctly peaceful with a rural atmosphere. This acreage surrounding the home offers numerous settings with a mix of pastures for horses, woodlands, a natural spring, beautiful landscaping, vegetable garden space and lots of shade trees.
