Copper Miners’ Rest image

Copper Miners’ Rest
Miami, Arizona

The Copper Miners’ Rest is so named for the men and women who worked and raised families amid the area industry, Copper Mining. Originally built as a two-story frame construction by Matti Soderman in 1910, it was converted / rebuilt into a concrete structure between 1917 and 1921. The main floor was the Wasa Bar - named for the Soderman's home region of Finland. The upstairs was a rooming house named Eva’s Rooms (Mrs. Soderman) that was designated for Scandinavian miners working in the nearby copper mine. A Finish Sauna was opened on the property for public use from 1910 until the 1950's. During the prohibition, the original bar was removed and a hidden basement was constructed to serve as a small speakeasy. The main floor served many other functions: including a mercantile, a land office and a post office. The two-story concrete house behind was built around 1910 - 1914 and was the Soderman's living quarters. Their two sons slept on the screened-in summer sleeping porch year round. The Sodermans sold the property in the early 1970's.

The building remained virtually untouched until Ms. Hayward bought it in 1996. In 1997 Ms. Hayward opened Delvan’s Drawing Room, a unique Bed and Fix your own D#%&! Breakfast, an old Miners’ style boarding house decorated with many local antiques acquired through networking with local building owners. In 2000, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Owing to health reasons, in 2005 Ms. Hayward closed the Bed and Fix your own D#%&! Breakfast business and posted a "For Sale" sign on the door.

The property sold in July 2006. Winona Dale Barcón and Keith J. Droste are the fourth and current property owners. We reopened the "Bed and Fix your own D#%! Breakfast" establishment after finding that the 1910 building (a historical miners' boardinghouse) had 'Good Bones' and is a great foundation for making improvements on the already beautifully restored historical building. Enjoy this historic bed and breakfast while visiting the Miami, AZ area.

Gresham, Oregon

Forest Springs sits nestled in the Gresham Buttes. On 3 acres with a parkland setting, we sit at the base of more than 2000 acres of forested open space. The English Cottage Home perched on a bluff well removed from the street was built in 1907. Originally part of the 1885 Land Grant to The Heiney Family, the Bed and Breakfast is now on the Local Gresham Historic Registry. Craftsman touches abound and all the common rooms are generous in size and comfort. In remodeling and decorating, we have honored the house's original nature while not forgetting modern life's comforts and convenience. All of our furnishings reflect the home's heyday from the twenties through the fifties. We have exceptional pieces of American Pottery and much of our furniture was imported from Paris and Barcelona. The grounds are always a work in progress. Adding to the abundance of Cedar, Fir, Chestnut and native maples, we have added 15,000 daffodils, 60 rose bushes, and 30 Miniature Japanese Maples. The restoration of the original terraced gardens is well underway and there is almost always something in bloom.

Millersburg, Pennsylvania

Return to the wealth and luxury of the Victorian era – post electricity! This beautiful Queen Anne on a quiet residential street served as the home and office of a physician who, like many Victorians, flaunted his wealth through the opulence of his home. With over 4,200 square feet of living space, there are unlimited opportunities to develop a thriving bed and breakfast with four guest rooms, private first floor quarters for the innkeepers, large kitchen and scullery, grand foyer with raised panel ceiling, and a spacious dining room and adjoining large parlor. There is a full bath and hookups for washer and dryer on both the first and second floor with plenty of space for a private bath for each room. Original wood flooring, built in cabinetry, two fireplaces, pocket doors, wrap around porch, open staircase and stained glass windows provide a perfect venue for entertaining . The two matching turrets feature curved glass windows and a widow’s walk with entry from the third floor. Although the third floor is unfinished, it would make a wonderful innkeeper’s quarters allowing for two additional guest rooms or a large extended stay suite on the first floor. The full basement and five bay garage offer extensive storage and work space.

A business opportunity lies in wait as there is no other bed and breakfast in the area and other lodging options are limited. The location is just blocks from kayaking or canoeing on the Susquehanna River and a ferry boat which carries cars across the river to connect with Routes 11/15. Two miles away is the Ned Smith Nature Center, drawing visitors year round. Nestled between the river and the mountains between Sunbury and Harrisburg, this beautiful home can offer respite for travelers along Route 147, a popular route for cyclists who want to avoid the four lane hi-ways. Zoning would also allow for this property to include a tea room or fine dining restaurant; or perhaps you just need a lovely home for a growing family.

John Rutledge House Inn image

John Rutledge House Inn
Charleston, South Carolina

John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge.
A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork.

The Old House Goldrush Guesthouse image

The Old House Goldrush Guesthouse
Clinton, Canada

Originally built in the mid-1800s by a Mexican packer named Valenzuela, the old house was partially completed before he moved to Dog Creek, as he felt the Gold Rush was passing him by. He was responsible for much of the building in the Dog Creek settlement. He returned and completed the old house in approximately 1865. It was a Road House for many years after the Gold Rush for the freight haulers who wagon trained their freight from Ashcroft to points north, for example, the Gang Ranch. It was lived in by many families over the next 100 years and was found by the Canuel family in 1992 in a state of collapse. The Canuel family disassembled the entire structure, moved it back from the road, and placed it on a proper foundation. It was reconstructed log by log with new logs for the first three rounds (as the others were rotten) and stands as the beautiful old home you see today.
