This is Great home for someone who loves the interesting and rich history of the South. HISTORY OF 3206 DANTZLER STREET AS KNOWN BY CURRENT OWNER The home was built in 1901 by Alfred Dantzler who was one of the owners of the Dantzler Logging Mills on Sawmill Point in Moss Point. It remained a private residence of the Dantzler family until the 1930 when it was rented to one of the foreman of the Dantzler Mills. His family lived there for several years with their children, and we were fortunate to meet one of this family sons when he came to our house with his son to visit a few years back, his sister still lives a few doors down on the other side of the street from us. In the 1940’s it was turned into a boarding house and the man who was born in the house at this time still lives on Griffin Street, we do not know how long it remained a boarding house or who else lived there. It sat abandoned for many years until the late 1960’s or early 1970’s. A gentleman named Mr. Rogers bought it to renovate it as it was disrepair by this time. Mr. Rogers owned the palate company in Moss Point and he worked on it for 17 years restoring it, unfortunately when some of the wood work was being stripped with a heat when contractor left the heat stripper on and the house caught on fire. Fortunately very little damage was done, it was only on the second floor but all the stained glass windows were blown out by the heat of the fire. Mr. Rogers eventually lost the house. Mr. Rogers has since pasted on but Mrs. Rogers still lives on Maple Street. A family from Texas moved into it in the late 1990’s, the gentleman worked for Chevron Oil Company. They lived in it for about a year and did no work to the house, it was then sold again. In the early 2000’s Mr. Bishop, Moss Point Mayor bought it and made upgrades again to the house. We bought the house in May 2006 and continue to work on it, we feel it should be restored to its former glory as it is a historical home of Moss Point. There are a four Dantzler homes in Moss Point, only one is on the historical register that is the one on Griffin Street. We have done some research on the home and have learned it may be a George Barber house the famed architect of the early 1900’s. There is The Shepard House in Mobile Alabama which is a Barber house and except for some minor differences in the interior it is identical to our home, we know for sure the Shepard House is a Barber house as it is listed on the historical register as such. We have been blogging with Tim Ice of the University of Nevada Las Vegas, he is the George Barber authority of America, the society of people who own Barber houses is referred to as the Merryman Society and it would very easy to prove if this is a Barber house. The house if full of character and a joy to live in, we have some many people come to our front porch with their stories of the house and we find it intriquing that it has such a history and we were privileged to be part of this history and have the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people in Moss point while sitting on our front porch.
