The Ackermann/Swords House, built in 1889, is Second Empire in style and located in the historic Chapline Street Row district of Wheeling, WV. It was built by Dr. Gregory Ackermann, and designed by architect Edgar Wells. Dr.Ackermann was a prominent surgeon who emigrated to Wheeling in 1880.

The Gregory Ackermann HouseThe Ackermann-Swords House is located in Chapline Street Row Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic places. It is one of eight high-style Victorian houses located there, all built in the late 1800's.
Chapline Street Row Historic DistrictChapline Street Row Historic district is comprised of 8 Victorian structures on the West side of the 2300 block of Chapline street, from 2301 Chapline to 2321 Chapline. It is a neighborhood of large homes built by wealthy Wheeling merchants and professionals in the late 1800’s, at which time Wheeling was among the largest cities west of the Appalachian Mountains and a gateway to the West. Chapline Street Row is considered to be one of the most important , intact rows of Victorian structures in West Virginia, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
