Nathaniel Russell House

Facade
Facade
"Since the early 1800s, visitors have admired the townhouse of Nathaniel and Sarah Russell, completed in 1808. Set amid spacious gardens, the mansion is recognized as one of America's most important neoclassical dwellings. The graceful interiors with elaborate plasterwork ornamentation, geometrically shaped rooms and a magnificent free-flying staircase are among the most exuberant ever created in early America. Furnished with period antiques and works of art, many of Charleston origin, the house evokes the gracious lifestyle of the city's merchant elite."

Nathanial Russell House Commentary

"The stair in the Russell House is one of the most graceful to be seen as it whirls free of wall, to the third floor. The smooth white plaster planes accent its slender mahogany rail, while the stair treads and risers set up a staccato angularity. It is extraordinary technically and esthetically."

"Although the plan of the Russell House shows influences of Britain's Robert Adam (1728-92), such as the ovoid drawing room opposite the stair, the exterior is basically in the then-burgeoning Federal Style. But its greatest distinction is its stair coiling almost through the roof."
