Facade
Melrose is the most intact Antebellum estate in the nation. It was completed in 1848, was the home of John T. McMurran and his family. Mr. McMurran came to Natchez in the 1820s, from Pennsylvania. He had a very lucrative law practice and owned plantations in 3 states totaling over 100,000 acres where about 300 slaves raised cotton, timber, and livestock.

Melrose Information

Melrose is the most intact Antebellum estate in the nation. It was completed in 1848, was the home of John T. McMurran and his family.
Mr. McMurran came to Natchez in the 1820s from Pennsylvania. He had a very lucrative law practice and owned plantations in 3 states totalling over 100,000 acres where about 300 slaves raised cotton, timber, and livestock.

There are nine of Melroses' dependency buildings still standing on the grounds, including slave cabins.
Inside the main house you can see original hand-painted canvas flooring.

Melrose is owned and operated by the National Park Service.

Open daily 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Guided tours on the hour from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
