Crawford House Biography

Significance: In its architectural and historical resources survey of the community conducted in the early 1990s, Altadena Heritage determined the Crawford house was eligible for listing on a local inventory of significant properties, due to its status as one of West Altadena’s surviving farm structures, its good state of preservation, and its contribution to the architectural and historical context of the Glenrose Avenue neighborhood.

Original Building Permit: There is no original building permit on file for this property. Los Angeles County did not begin issuing permits for its unincorporated areas until 1927.

Other Building Permits: This house has evidently changed very little since it was first built. The only building permit found in County files for this property allowed the installation of new air-conditioning and heating equipment in March 1989.

First Owners:
Frank W. Crawford shared the house with his wife Kittie Ellen Crawford and their daughter Stella O. Crawford. At the time the house was built, the Crawford property encompassed almost nine acres, running 769 feet north-south along Rose Ave. between Mariposa and Harriet Streets and 505 feet east-west along Mariposa and Harriet. Although local directories in the mid-1910s identified Mr. Crawford as a dairy rancher, the 1920 census described him as a fruit rancher. West Altadena at that time had a number of small family dairies, supplying milk to their immediate neighborhoods, so the Crawford “ranch” may well have had a small number of cows grazing under fruit trees.

Assessor’s Records:
The Los Angeles County Assessor first visited the property probably in the year 1915. At that time he recorded a single 1 ½ story bungalow with estimated square footage of 2012 located on 8.93 acres. Also on the property were a barn, a bottling house, and a bunkhouse. Heat was provided by a wood-burning stove. Interior finishes were described as “plain” and “stock”. The Assessor returned in 1922 to record construction of a garage on the property.
