Situated on Historic Kirkwood's premier Howard Street, this painstakingly restored home is one of the finest examples of the Eastlake Victorian style within the City of Atlanta.

Built Circa 1892, as one of four model homes by Atlanta builder Joel Hurt and legendary purveyor of Coca-Cola, Asa Candler, it is the only one that remains with its original features still largely intact. The home holds a place of distinction as one of the oldest homes in the community, predating the establishment of the City of Kirkwood proper in 1899 prior to annexation into Atlanta in 1922.

The home was saved from certain collapse in the late 1980's by two neighbors whom immediately fell in love with its high-architecture and set to restoring it to its former glory. Plaster was repaired, fireplaces and chimneys rebuilt, wood was redressed.

Perhaps one of the homes most distinguishing features is the two-story tower ascending over the front entry foyer. During a roofing project the current owner uncovered some inexplicable framework; a short while later in Newnan, Georgia he discovered a nearly identical home (see "America's Painted Ladies") that featured such a tower. The light went off in his mind and the tower was commissioned to meticulously replicate what must have fallen into disrepair and been removed in decades past. The tower features a classically styled sunbeam-pattern and scalloped shingle dormers.

Sunlight spills into the main foyer from four stained glass accent windows in the stately tower above the front entry. The entrance hall features custom plaster crown moldings meticulously replicated from a period leaf/blade pattern and is highlighted by an antique Eastlake style cast iron chandelier originally from a prestigious home in Richmond Virginia. Hand painted bronze stencilwork adorns the rich burgundy walls. The foyer opens onto the main staircase, music room and parlor. A recovered Walnut and American Chestnut newel post adorns the open staircase which is constructed of heart pine treads and risers and a unique period rail. The stair and main hall walls feature a Bradbury & Bradbury hand-pulled wallpaper in a classic design with painted accents as well as an accurately oriented hand painted compass rose on the ceiling of the stair landing. Enjoy roof-top al fresco dining and a chance at a skyline view amidst the trees through the French windows opening from the stair landing.
