Historic Home in Jerome, Arizona

The Kelly House (historic name is Madelena’s House and is on the National Historic Registry)– this 100-year-old home in Historic Jerome, Arizona is 100 years old. It has had 4 owners. Owners did a total renovation in 2004. The main level was once The Alaskan Fountain, an ice cream parlor. Currently, the main level is an art gallery, Gallery 527, featuring local artists from The Verde Valley. There is an ornate faux tin ceiling, hardwood floor, dimmable track lighting, sound system, bathroom with lovely crystal chandelier and pull down ladder leading to crawl space with storage room.

A beautiful sculpture garden filled with old rose bushes is on the main level.

A new steel and cement staircase leads upstairs to the house, which sits on a double lot, one of the few parcels of its type in Jerome. The reinforced deck offers a simply stunning view of the red rocks of Sedona. A side yard is large enough for more of the sculpture garden, table and chairs and the area behind the house has a new cement pad which also offers another seating area. The brickwork behind the house is original, as are the steps leading up to the next street. There is a small root cellar behind the building, which is currently used for storage.

Inside the house, the main space boasts an open floor plan. New wood laminate flooring is perfect for its use as a vacation rental. The all-new kitchen has dark wood cabinets, a full sized refrigerator, stove, microwave and dishwasher. The rest of this open space has a dining area and two seating areas. There is satellite TV and wireless access in the house.

Up three steps, two equal queen sized bedrooms each have a door to the back area of the property. The rooms were originally used to house miners who would come and go, not entering the main section of the house. Under the bed in one of the rooms, a trap door was discovered that leads underground to a tunnel system. During the renovation, this was covered again.

There is an all-new bathroom with cultured marble tub and sink and new tile floor. A stacked washer and dryer are in the foyer by the bedrooms. There is one very large closet in the house. There is central AC and Heat.

Jerome was once a mining boomtown of 15,000 people and was referred to as ‘the wickedest town in the west’. When the mines closed in 1950, Jerome became the largest ghost town in the west with less than a dozen people. In the 60’s, artists began to arrive and today Jerome is a thriving artist colony of 400 people with 30 galleries and studios. Its proximity to Sedona makes it a thriving tourist destination.
