1888 Cottage
Carmel By The Sea, California 93921
The Original…”Carmel Cottage”
This incomparable Carmel home was originally built for Davenport Bromfield in 1888 to live in while he mapped out the streets of Carmel. As the oldest house in Carmel it is on both the State and City Registries of Historic Homes.
Dr. Eric Berne, famous psychiatrist and international famed author of ‘The Games People Play”, bought the four bedroom, three bath house in 1948 to accommodate himself, his wife and their growing family. This piece of history is truly the original “Carmel Cottage” with all the warmth and charm now associated with that famous term. A separate writing study, built among the gardens, is very much as Dr. Berne left it and contains many of his personal items, books, photo albums and hand written notes as well as unpublished papers and manuscripts.
