History Of The Waller Home

Built in 1935, this wonderful home was a honeymoon present from Mr. Sternberg to his beloved daughter. Mr. Sternberg was a merchant, owning a local mercantile & leather goods store. The vacant land was purchased from Percy I. Young, Vice President of The First National Bank.

Carroll & Lolitta Waller lived in the home until 1946. Mr. Waller repaired radios & had a sound truck business. He advertised different products by broadcasting from speakers in his truck while driving around the city. He was also the announcer for the high school football team; broadcasting games over his truck’s sound system. Lolitta was involved in the American Red Cross & fundraised for WWII troops.

In 1946, The Luper family purchased the home. They were a musical family. They owned Albany’s first music store & Mr. Luper taught music at Albany High School.

Another family of interest were the Finley family. They were musical too. Also Jo Masonhall, a music teacher, lived in the home in the 1990’s.
On March 18,1995, the home was featured in The House Next Door: Presented by the Historic Preservation League Of Oregon & Rejuvenation Inc. as part of the Winter Lecture Series Home Tour.
