Authentic 1870 Victorian

Every time I come up our street and the house comes in to view I am still charmed. We are delighted with its original features-carved wood details, ornate moldings, pocket doors, unique brass hardware. On the first floor each high ceiling in the 3 main rooms have different pattern pressed tin ceilings and 3 different patterns of multi-color parquet floors.Second floor bathroom is huge with the clawfoot tub in center of room. House is well situated on a hill in the middle of 1.3 acres. Very private, we have never needed curtains. Every room in the house has windows on two sides for great ventilation--nice and cool in summer. Surrounded by lots of trees, my bedroom feels like a tree house. In summer ,when it rains, we have dinner parties on the wide porch. Sunny days I have a table set up on the cobblestone patio for a dinner party surrounded by lillies and shaded by a cherry tree. Lots of perrenial flowers, rock walls and old trees. The seperate barn has room for two cars plus storage and workroom space. Swedish cast iron woodstove in livingroom. One hour commute to New York City.Village atmosphere, walk to schools, bike path, tennis courts.

Local History

During the Revolutionary War, George Washington`s troops spent the winter in Chester. This house built by Mr. Jackson ,a local merchant, using Thomas Shaw`s Sons, Architect of Newburgh. Lived in by the Green family for most of the 20th century. Pictures and history on file at Chester Historical Society.
Chester has a shopping area with a big Shoprite supermarket, movie theater(6 cimena), drug store, banks , Wendy`s, tractor supply, Lowes.
However on the other side of town within 3 blocks walking distance of the house is Historic Downtown Chester. Over 100 years old established with the original railroad there is an antique store, a great burger joint, a cosy diner, an ice cream parlor, laundry-mat, Village police station, small grocery,a bar/cabaret that books music entertainment and the former train station which now houses the Historical society. The bike path starts here which welcomes dogs and rollerbladers.

Public parks have lighted ball fields, soccer pitch, picnic areas, sledding hills. The town floods an area for ice skating.Within Chester is the tiny hamlet of Sugar Loaf, an artisan community, good for a sunday afternoon stroll for cappucino and crafts.Lycian Theater holds a full size audience for the symphony and ballet.
