"Maple Lawn"
Atlantic Highlands, N. J. 07716

A 14 Room "Summer Cottage on the Hill"
built in 1890 for Michael Montanye
by Adolph S. Huntera
and designed by architect Solomon H. Cohen

This 5000 square foot Queen Anne Victorian is one of the signature homes of Atlantic Highlands, built in 1890 by the same builders as the historical society's Strauss Mansion. The original owner, Michael Montanye, built this home as his summer cottage. He would travel from East 49th street ( along with many other "East 49ers ) each summer with his servants via ferry from NYC to Atlantic Highlands to enjoy all that the Jersey shore had to offer, including the beach, the boardwalk and the amusement park.

From the outside you can walk up the marble stairs and peanut stone steps leading to the front of the house located on 7th Ave. ( The back door is located on 8th Ave.). The original cedar shakes were handcut in different shapes to create various patterns on each side of the exterior. There is a fairytale turret, a 3 season gazebo/sunporch and a 2 story wrap around porch located on a double size lot with bay views and a detached, heated 2 car garage (originally an horse stable).

From the moment you enter the grand foyer of this classic 16 room Victorian "cottage" with it's original woodwork, you will appreciate the many original Victorian amenities throughout this stunning home. It boasts 9 large bedrooms on 3 floors, all with ample closet space (unusual for a Victorian). The banquet size dining room comes with hand painted
crown moldings, a crystal chandelier and the original large built-in

cabinet with glass doors, as well as a floor to ceiling bay window. The large living room has the original fireplace mantel and mirror, and there is a large newer eat-in kitchen with a new cook top, Italian tiled floor, and a double wall oven.

There are 3 1/2 baths, a laundry on the 2nd floor, high ceilings throughout, hand crafted wood floors and wood moldings, nooks and crannies galore, front and back staircases, plus a full partially finished cellar with a new cement floor, a large workshop area and a media room. There are 3 porches--2 wrap around porches on the first and second stories, and another smaller one on the back of the house on the second level. The second and third stories have a beautiful water view of the harbor, and the Verrazano Bridge.

The roof is new and guaranteed for 100 years. New copper gutters grace the outside. The house has been rewired throughout, and was totally insulated with organic materials 2 years ago. New first floor storm windows were installed 3 years ago. The first floor porch is mahogany, and was refinished 3 years ago as well.

You will also appreciate the short walk to all this quaint town has to offer---the elementary school, the banks, post office, wonderful restaurants and shops, and even our own movie theater! Plus walking to the ferry and bus to NYC is just a few blocks away.
