More About This House

The Ward House was built in 1893 for Presley Ward. The house has 4,350 sf and underwent a complete restoration in 2008. At that time, all new wiring, plumbing, roofing, and heating and air conditioning were installed.

The Ward House is located in Sealy's best historic neighborhood that has many restored historic homes.

The house has its original cypress siding and porches constructed of longleaf heart pine. All of the interior has original longleaf pine floors with the exception of the kitchen and family room (have newer cypress floors) and the bathrooms and laundry room which have either slate, ceramic or porcelain tiles.

The house has 4 large bedrooms, each with a full private bath. In addition, there is a formal parlor and dining room downstairs along with a large (21' x 23') family room off the large kitchen. The kitchen has the original beaded board walls and ceilings and has been outfitted with period-appropriate cabinets.

All of the work has been done and is move-in ready. The property has tremendous potential to become a B&B or a great family home. The house is on two lots totaling 3/4 acre. There are numerous mature trees. The yard is fenced with a sturdy wood 7' high privacy fence that has several attached pergolas.

Utilities are very reasonable. At the height of the summer, the electric bill runs approximately $400/month. The heat is natural gas and during the coldest months of the winter the combined water and gas bill runs approximately $200/month.

Surrounding Area

The Ward House is located in Sealy, Texas. Sealy has a population of a little over 6,000 and is located 30 minutes west of Houston on Interstate 10. Sealy retains the small-town charm of yesteryear and experiences a low crime rate, but is close enough to the larger cities to make commuting to work or traveling to museums, theatres and shopping a short trip.

The house is located three blocks from State Hwy 36 that runs north/south through Sealy and approximately 10 blocks from I-10.

The Ward House is within walking distance of several churches and the neighborhood park known as the Levine Park. The Levine Park is home to several annual events, including the Fantasy of Lights.

There are numerous interesting sites and tours in the area including the historic painted churches in neighboring Fayette County, winery tours, the San Felipe de Austin Museum in neighboring San Felipe, the Round Top Antiques Show and many others.

History

The Ward House was built in 1893 for Presley Ward. The home was owned by his descendants until 2006 when it was purchased by the current owners.

Presley Ward came to Texas in the 1850s as a young man. He actively bought and sold real estate throughout his life. He also owned a cattle ranch south of Sealy.

Much of the Ward family history is known.

Many off the personal documents, including the family Bible, are in the possession of the current owners. The current owners also have many family photographs, scrapbooks and other personal records of the Ward family.

The Ward House was one of the earliest homes built in Sealy and certainly one of the most elegant.

The house retains its original windows, doors, hardware and flooring.

All of the wood in the house, including the flooring, is longleaf heart pine.
