History

One of six 19th Century homes built by the Berkeley family in St. Martin's Parish, Broomfield was built for and by Miss Lucy Carter Berkeley (born 1773) a spinster daughter of Nelson and Elizabeth Wormley Carter of Airwell. The house was probably built in 1820, for in that year, Miss Berkeley received a 224 acre tract of land from her brother, Edmund Berkeley, and she lived at Broomfield for the rest of her life.

Broomfield Farm came into the hands of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Farrell, who renovated the home. The Ellis family purchased the Broomfield estate from the Farrells, and Broomfield has been their residence for over 50 years.
