History

The house was built for S M Alexander by Contractor Franklin Pierce McDowell and was completed in 1899. This property is named Valentine Square in honor of the Alexander daughter who was born on St. Valentines Day. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 8, 1984. The present owners purchased the property in December of 1999 from the Granddaughter of S M Alexander after it had remained in the family for almost exactly 100 years. The four front screen doors are said by the Granddaughter to be original to the house. The house contains various woods throughout and has never suffered being painted over and this is one of the reasons it qualifies for the National Register. A box in the attic contains some left over tiles for the fireplaces. There are also two boxes that contain spare glass shades for the kitchen light fixtures. The footed bath tubs and laundry room ( originally kitchen ) sink were installed when the house received indoor plumbing.

Recent Improvements

The house has been rewired with modern cable and a 200 amp panel. No knob and tube wiring is in service. There is an ADT burglar and fire alarm system and local fire and carbon monoxide alarms. Throughout the house most of the woodwork have been refinished using the original type of shellac. Brick Garage / Carriage house on the property is usable for a full size car and has electricity. 16x24 Storage building on the rear of the property was built for the present owners and has a double three quarter inch floor for storage of lawn equipment and other heavy items or a small car. It has electricity. Not shown in the photos is the original smoke house and with electricity and natural gas for hobbies, a studio or a shop. The hobby garage 24x26 with concrete floor and insulated ceiling. It has electricity and is heated by natural gas. Also contains a certified lift useful for parking an additional car storage and for ease in working on vehicles.
