Less than 200 miles from NYC, Oneonta is easily accessed by public transportation, an easy commute from the Port Authority bus terminal, or a scenic drive through the Catskills. Take advantage of the Foothills Performing Arts Center as well as other music venues, the seasonal farmer's markets, and a variety of restaurants, bistros and bars. State University of New York at Oneonta and Hartwick College call this city home.

Oneonta is close to fishing, hiking, and Horseback riding. Visit nearby Cooperstown -- Baseball Hall of Fame, Farmer's Museum, Fenimore Art Museum, and Glimmerglass Opera.

History

58 Elm Street, built in 1890, served for a time as the home for President and Mrs. Charles Hunt, the head of the teachers’ college that preceded SUNY Oneonta and for whom the Hunt College Union is now named. At some point in the history of 58 Elm the house was divided into three apartments and remained a multiple family dwelling until 2006, when the Colletts bought and restored the house attempting to recapture its original grandeur. They added modern updates such as radiant heat, new wiring, plumbing, electricity, more than 54 windows and new bathrooms and lighting fixtures. Two kitchens were combined into one totally rebuilt eat-in-kitchen with a restaurant stove and other updates.

The house maintains original pocket doors, baseboards, oak moldings, brass, copper and glass doorknobs and plates. Most of its original oak woodwork was stripped and where needed was replaced by wood specially cut by Wightman’s Lumber Company in Milford, New York. Wightman’s also provided special tools to replace rosettes and scores of plinths. Every spindle in both banisters of the house was replaced as was the main banister after Wightman’s was able to supply the 16-foot piece of oak.

The house is on three finished floors. The first is composed of a living room, music room, library with built in shelves and powder room, and walk in coat closet that separates the formal dining room from the entrance hall. The kitchen, which spans the width of the house is in the back. The second floor consists of four bedrooms, two currently used as studies. There is a guest bedroom next to a three-quarter bathroom, the master bedroom suite with walk-in closet, dressing room and full bathroom with a linen closet and washer and dryer. The third floor is a loft like space that is used as extra guest quarters and can be used as a studio. It has a large walk in closet and full bathroom.

The large brick structure was cleaned and pointed and the property paved and landscaped. Six hundred feet of asbestos was removed along with an oil-fired furnace when the house was converted to natural gas.

During the summer months, and in keeping with the 19th century historical flavor of the house, one can see an array of green awnings as you approach on Elm.

The house was awarded “Historic Property of Merit” in 2008 by the City of Oneonta.
