Tell 'em you saw it on OldHouses.com!

Only a move out of state makes this charming home available.

Welcome to the Worrell/Dunlap House! Built in 1826, this house was one of the first 10 constructed in a place that was expected to rival Philadelphia as a port, since the first version of what is known as the C&D Canal (the pathway between the Delaware River and Chesapeake Bay) was built here. Therefore, to support the expected population growth, the house was designed as a federal period semi-detached home. One of the first owners, owned both halves and used it as a living quarters and a doctor’s office. A great deal of expense was used in building, including multiple layers of brick, marble used in some of the windowsill and fireplace surrounds - a couple are being used to this day and the evidence of the others – including the summer kitchen in the basement (would make a great wine cellar) still exist. Curved walls in the dining and dressing room, nine foot ceilings, turned stair case, random width floors and the list could go on. Also, added a few years ago was a hand built 12 X 16 log cabin type building - a must see!! Pride in ownership definitely reflects in this house!!
Home Owners Warranty offered as well!!
So enjoy a piece of history, while enjoying low property taxes and no sales tax, while living by the water! Priced to sell!!

Surrounding Area

Property taxes are under $2000 and include municipal amenities such as trash, recycling and yard waste removal, snow plowing, a beautiful park and promenade which leads to the Mike Castle trail along the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, two playgrounds and a ball field. There are also two community buildings available to residents, one of which is partially occupied by the library.

If you like the outdoors, the local marina not only rents boat slips, but rents boats, kayaks, canoes and bikes as well. Delaware City is also located on what is known as the Delaware Bayshore Byway. Many bicyclists enjoy riding this route as well as the Mike Castle trail (which is also used by pedestrians and equestrians and yes, we have a stable where you can rent horses as well). We are also home to the American Birding Association, not only because we are surrounded by what is known as the 1000-acre marsh, but because Fort Delaware is also one of the largest heronries on the east coast.

History

The Worrell/Dunlap House is part of the Historic District, which is on the National Register. Delaware City is also home to Fort Delaware, most known (aside from being on the Ghost Hunters show) as a prison camp during the Civil War (thousands of prisoners from Gettysburg were kept there). It is also home to Fort DuPont, which reached its prominence during WWII, as well as housed German prisoners.
