More About This House

Built in 1876, this Queen Ann/East Lake beauty is unique with its decorative brick and stone work exterior that is framed by handsome wood carvings on the porches and cornices. The craftsmanship is carried through the massive front door and into the 14 rooms and 3 levels of this Grand Lady. A career change is taking the owners to the Northwest and this home is needing a new caretaker of its 140-year history. She has been lovingly and skillfully updated over the past 6 years. In excess of $83,000 has been invested in modern upgrades but the charm and essence of the East Lake style is still very present. Don't miss the opportunity to own a piece of architectural history that has Landmark status and is on the National Register of Historic Places. She is waiting for YOUR family to begin creating their memories and maintain her architectural integrity for years to come!

Historic Architecture of Quincy, IL

The City of Quincy has some of the most impressive architecture of any community in Illinois, with over 3,600 buildings on the National Historic Register. The 6th of the Lincoln/Douglas Debates took place in Quincy's Washington Park.

From Quincy’s earliest days of development, a remarkable number of pre-Civil War buildings exist today. Many Federal and Greek Revival style homes and commercial structures built as early as the 1830s can be found in and around the core of the city’s Downtown Historic District.

A strong historic preservation ethic has helped to maintain these brick, stone and timber gems for visitors as well as for generations of Quincians to come.

German immigrants helped shape Quincy’s unique cultural background and this area is known as the South Side German Historic District.

As Quincy experienced its greatest periods of growth between 1850 and 1880, and again in the late 1890s, the population began to move north of the downtown into larger homes.

During the latter part of this period, growth occurred directly to the east of the downtown area. The stately mansions and large high-style homes of the east end of the city are probably the most memorable Quincy buildings. Every architectural style popular within the United States during the Civil War through the turn of the century can be found in what is now known as the East End Historic District.

National architectural movements continued to influence the designs of buildings constructed in Quincy during the first half of the 20th century. The Prairie style, made significant by the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright, can be found in homes throughout the city.

American architecture also influenced the designs of Quincy’s large stock of Craftsman bungalows, identified by one and one-half story massing, full-facade width porch and brackets along the eave. It has been speculated that Quincy has the largest number of such houses per capita of any city in Illinois.

See and experience Quincy’s fine architecture via some fantastic ways…..driving, biking, walking…..take your pick!

What I love about this house.

This house is centrally located to downtown and easy access to cultural events, restaurants, and highways. Quincy has a small regional airport to St. Louis, and has Amtrak trains to Chicago.

The home is on the most exclusive two blocks of all of Quincy! As a matter of fact, 16th & Maine is listed as one of the most significant corners in America, by the Smithsonian Institute, due to the awesome and diverse homes on the 4 corners. It sits next to the Board of Ed. building, which gives it complete privacy on one side, and the other is a large Italianate estate . The private screened porch overlooks the huge property next door (A second home for the owners, mean, privacy again!).

The gardens have lots of perennials that bloom for three seasons. With the privacy that surrounds the grounds, it is perfect for small intimate parties, but has large enough spaces to host grand garden parties as well!

The open floor plan and tall ceilings make the home feel more spacious than it already is! One can look through the front porch window, all the way out the back kitchen window.

The details abound in this house, including original hinges and door knobs, as well as the spoon-carved moldings of the door frames. The original oak flooring is in nearly all the rooms on the first and second floors. The dry basement has a wonderful wine cellar, a laundry room, a huge cedar closet, and plenty of storage space! Many of the modern updates have retained the historical aspects of the house, such as transom windows, new AC that uses internal chases throughout the house and more.

With three separate master suites, the home can be utilized in many different ways: easy multiple spaces for a large family; a mother-in-law suite; a fantastic B & B (2nd-floor walk-in closet is plumbed and wired for a smaller kitchen).

Recent Improvements

The owners have lovingly improved the interior and exterior of this exclusive property! New historic paint job, custom milled and installed front and side porches, New chimney caps, some gutters and drains to insure the basement remains dry. New garage, with new retaining wall and concrete pad. New high-efficiency boiler, A/C, hot water heaters, some electric updates, new bathrooms...the list goes on and on!
