Greek Revival Farmhouse

Circa 1850 Farmhouse, Greek Revival
Authentic replica of a Vermont Greek Revival farmhouse, circa 1850, with classic Shaker simplicity. It is wonderfully sited on 14+/- acres with year round mountain views. A story and a half barn designed by McKie Wing Roth accompanies the house and a small smoke house like building with antique tin roof shingles. The exterior and interior include all the appropriate antique details. These include period frieze and fascia, exterior doors, center brick chimney, a standing seam roof and consistent door and window trim along with 6 over 6 wood windows with true divided lights. Inside are antique doors from a nearby period home, Bennington knobs, locally cast thumb latches, antique hinges, wide-board pine plank flooring with boards up to 19" wide, half are hand planed, old glass, a mudroom with bead board and an old fashion walk-in pantry (5 X 7). One bedroom has an ochre milk-painted floor. A woodstove (Vermont Castings) as was common to the era. The first floor windows and doors have beaded trim and the second floor trim is simpler. The sliding barn doors are hung on antique rollers and track obtained from a local barn.

An Exact Replica of an 1850 Greek Revival Farmhouse

The floor plan of the house follows that of a side stair Greek Revival. The front door opens to a large airy keeping room with living, dining and kitchen areas, custom cabinets that are extra deep and two-board cherry counter tops. From the keeping room one enters the ell to the mudroom (a transom with old glass is above the opening to the ell as if a door originally had separated the house from a shed). The mudroom has a cabinet with a sink and maple countertop, washer/dryer hookups and beadboard and above the bead board are 5 antique hooks for outside clothing or anything else one wants to hang. Off the mudroom is the walk-in pantry, a tiled bath (subway wall tile, hex floor tile) and a spacious bedroom (ochre colored milk-painted floor).

Going back to the side stair and up (stairway has four cherry newel posts and bannisters) one enters onto a wide, windowed area (9'4" X 31') intended as a library/gallery space, and off this space are two large bedrooms, a tiled bath, a walk-in closet with shelving and an extra-large spare room for family or office.

24' X 28' Hemlock framed, pine sided Barn; two stories with stairway to full loft (pine flooring), perfect for studio. Poured concrete floor and footings to below the frost line, electricity and frost free water line (usable throughout winter).

A private, bucolic setting, 2 streams, stone walls, abundant wildlife and gentle land to enjoy just minutes from the village which sits at the foot of Otsego Lake. Historic Cooperstown is endowed with the Farmer's Museum, an authentic village depicting early liife in the Leatherstockinng area, made famous by James Fenimore Cooper, the New York State Historical Association's Fenimore House and its extensive collection of Native American art and artifacts, the internationally renowned Glimmerglass Opera (reviewed in the New York Times), Bassett teaching hospital and the world class Otesaga Hotel and Resort and classic golf course.
