Boxwood's History
Situated on .86 mostly secluded acres, with mature trees and professional landscaping, Boxwood draws its name from the 150 year old boxwoods in the backyard. The magnificent flowering chestnut tree in the front yard is one of the largest specimens in the county.Boxwood features roughly 4000 square feet of finished living space, as well as a hardwood floored attic and an 1830's four room, two story outbuilding which provides space for a workroom and storage.
The rear wing of the home was built in the 1790's, and the front portion was constructed in the early 1830's. In the 1920's, Boxwood served as an inn for tourists traveling the "National Road" to and from Washington, DC, and the wooden sign advertising Boxwood's "Rooms for Tourist" hangs in the home today.
Restored to the period, Boxwood retains its historic architectural features, from its chamfered pillars to its exterior decorative trim and 8' high four paneled doors throughout the main house. Large, original wood shutters bracket the windows on the front and side of the main house.
The Main Level
The first floor of Boxwood features 12' ceilings, hardwood floors, and a wide sweeping staircase.Original plaster medallions ornament the ceilings in the entryway, formal living room and formal dining room.
The formal living room and separate dining room boast original fireplaces and mantels, as well as large windows.
The library, with built-in shelves and an additional original fireplace, is warm and inviting.
The new gourmet kitchen has granite counters, cherry cabinets, new appliances, and a tin ceiling, which compliment the historic fabric of the home. Table space by a large window, and a large pantry and laundry area set in a private room off of the kitchen, make this area functional for daily living.
A staircase ascends from the kitchen to the second floor at the rear of the house.
The cozy den is perfectly situated to be remodeled into another full bath, or used as-is for an in-home office.
The sunroom, located just off of the kitchen, is surrounded by sliding glass doors and leads to a second story deck which overlooks the yard, as well as offering access to teh top floor of the 1830's outbuilding.
The Upper Levels
A unique circular staircase rises three stories from a separate hallway on the first floor to the hardwood-floored attic on the third floor.The original details on the banister and the finely detailed woodwork of the railings reflect the glorious architecture of the period.
The spacious upstairs hall leads to four large bedrooms, three with original fireplaces, one smaller bedroom, and a generous bathroom with a separate shower and claw foot tub.
The spacious bedrooms boast hardwood floors and large windows.
One of the rooms has exposed beams and is currently used as an upstairs parlor. The stairs outside this room descend from the second floor foyer to the kitchen.
