The George Porter House (1890)

Originally known as "The George Porter House" this home, built in 1890, is featured in the book: Bethany's Old Houses and Community Buildings by Alice Bice Bunton (1972). Charming farm house on a flat 3 acre lot is part of a larger 58 acre parcel, located in one of the most desirable areas of Bethany Connecticut, just minutes from downtown New Haven and Yale University. Family owned property since 1925. First time on the market in 80 years. Located on the east side of Wooding Hill Rd, at the corner with Porter Hill Rd, just north of Hoadley Rd, the property extends eastward to a variable boundary which at one point intrudes into the city of Hamden. The entire 58 acre estate is surrounded on three sides by the Regional Water Authority (RWA) protected land, and is one of the last remaining larger sized parcels in the area. Behind the house the terrain slopes down gently from 638 to 600 feet in elevation, then drops quite steeply into a broad wetland (450 feet elevation) interwoven with lovely streams, and then rises again up a big hill. Abundant wildlife and beautiful timberland. The outstanding feature of this property is a large bedrock outcropping (elevation 750 feet) in the northeastern corner of the parcel with stunning views to the southwest which look out over the surrounding countryside, valley and Lake Bethany. Lake Bethany is a reservoir on the West River built in 1894. Walking distance to Lake Bethany Recreation Area and scenic hiking trails.
